Comments:I was only with you for a couple of years but thought it was a great school. A terrific atmosphere, a can-do, supportive culture and many inspiring teachers inc. Messrs Ryan, Carnell, Wardle, Piper, Duffield and who was the English master - not Richards, the other one? Those guys really believed in the project. I still see John Forester, Barry Castrique, Colin Smith, David Blake et al, a couple of times a year. Anyone know what happened to Dave Hills, Glynn Hall or Bill Marriott? Top geezers. I became an architect, then an academic. Retired now but teaching a little, doing some journalism and still trying to play the trumpet! Much affection to all.

Comments:Thanks for the trip down memory lane. Haven't forgotten the chemistry teaching by Eric Hanmore, who commuted from Worthing, had a beautiful wife and moved on to an education college lectureship. The school plays, (and not just that aspect), were compromised by the absence of girls but 'The Government Inspector' and 'My Three Angels' were especially memorable and inspired choices. Bricklaying was a worthy and possibly unique part of the curriculum thanks to Fred Sherrington before it was shortsightedly dropped.

Comments:I transferred from Lanfranc Secondary Modern in the autumn term 1960 on a 13+ Scholarship and our [3S] form master was Fred Sherringham, the Brickwork Teacher. I can still recall many of my former fellow pupils names, some with more happily than others! Stayed until the first few weeks of the 63/64 autumn term in Upper 5th when my parents moved in the October to Yeovil in Somerset.

Comments:'The School of Building'... I also went to the “brick bashe[r]s” from 1949 to 1952 along with Roy Hudd. Roy and I met up again a few years later when we were both in the RAF and he came to our camp with an entertainment group. As well as Killer Copley, Gibbo Gibson and others previously mentioned, I remember Ma Gee who taught art, RubberNeck Gould who taught geography (so called because he seemed able to extend his neck a good 6” when he was annoyed or making a point) and also Dizzy Dizzell, can’t remember what he taught, who would sneak up behind you and whack the back of your head if you were talking in class! The days of slipper and cane long gone.

We're just a load of old men now but it all seems such a simpler, more structured time. I am sure we all wish we'd worked harder and paid more attention. The reason I'm curious about Chaz is that he always seemed straight and honest, in contrast to the many people I've encountered in business. I'm sure we've all had interesting lives though. I'll keep in touch with the site.

I've been looking through some of my old photographs of the event, but it seems they are pretty much replicas of Tim's, so I'll not bother to upload them. Is there likely to be a Diamond Jubilee event for the class of 61? Cheers Derek

Brian Large was a good bloke and I well remember that it was great fun being part of the production. I also recall that afterwards a group of us bought an LP of D'Oyly Carte performing 'Trial by Jury' which we all signed and presented to Mr Large.

Comments:(Rebuilt by the Webmaster from a CSTS Contact Page entry) I was at CSTS until 1962 so I was glad to find this web site. Referring to Richard Durden's Memorabilia the Brian Large he found in Wiki is the same as the music teacher at the school. He did go to BBC and learn the ropes of filming concerts. During my time I got involved in 'Trial by Jury' as a singer, and later kept touch with him as I joined the Croydon Youth Choir which he conducted. When at the BBC he invited me to lunch in the Broadcasting House staff canteen, where he suggested I audition for the BBC Symphony Chorus (then called BBC Choral Society) that sang at the Proms and other places. This I did and stayed with the choir until I moved from London area. I shall look to see if I have any material to send to the website. By the way - thanks for running the site. Regards

Comments:I have read Haydn Davies' recent posting. I recall him, like me, being a fellow of the house of Lutyens, but in the fourth year, along with Colin Messom who was not only another house member, but our goalkeeper in the school team. I was in VF at the time and I am reaching out to those who were my contemporaries in 1963? I see that in the past, my classmates, Graham Childs and Henry Price posted messages. Also Haydn, I see you are a QS by profession, like me and one who has travelled far afield.

Comments:Dear All, I contacted you a few years ago and then lost contact again. Maybe I was using a different email address at that time (kakekhaydn@yahoo.co.uk) but I no longer use that. It was interesting to read Richard Durden's contribution. We both worked in the school library. Coincidentally I am also a Quantity Surveyor but our paths never crossed after leaving school. I remember Tim Ecott and Andropov and another guy with blond hair and glasses who looked a bit like the milky bar kid (sorry, no offence meant), played in a band with little Stevie ?? (drums) and others. You guys were all a year below me. I was in Mick (Buck) Ryan's form from I R to V R and then Upper V for one year. I am disappointed that there are no names there from my form or from Jimpy James form for the same years (suffix W). He only took first year boys and used to alternate form letters W & J. I would like to contact Richard Durden if possible. Maybe I did already and then lost contact again. So many memories and so many "where are they now" type questions. I can remember nearly all the names on the Class Register if you are interested in that sort of thing. I can add a few more teacher's names like Wardle, Foxon, Purdy, MONICA, Eric Spencer. Thats enough for now. Please resume contact. Regards, Haydn

Two names I do recall are Geoff Anscombe and Phil Donovan. I see Geoff has made a couple of entries, and been very open about his 'experiences'. Phil, I remember was into boxing and extremely enthusiastic in tackling (football) in the school playground! Thank you Tim for this site.

Comments:Just discovered this site as I m not on any other social media site. Sadly for me very little early stuff. I am a bit confused by the official opening date of 1958 as I m sure I attended the new school in 1955-6 and was in the Upper Fifth in 1958. From my fading memory I recall Elsie(History/RI) handing out punishments of lines written line by line from the text book and Gould(Geography) drilling facts into us then having tests and appointing a Top Boy for the class. Is that a picture of Mr Piper (Physics) in the 2002 reunions? Went from Ingram school in 1953 to CSTS in South Norwood then to the new school in South Croydon. As a school then it seemed to be a political experiment to educate pupils for a non academic technical career. The Upper Fifth (GCE O level) had a set number of subjects. I remember Richards (English) selecting the AEB exam as we would not have coped with other examining boards in the year we had to get up to standard. Although we took Woodwork, Technical Drawing, Maths, English, Physics and Chemistry, Brickwork, Metalwork, Geography and History were excluded. Did later years take these subjects? I see a French teacher was recruited later was this move to Grammerise the school? Also were GCE A levels introduced? Any more information welcome.

I share Rogers memories of the daily trek to the Civic Hall for school dinners, and also recall that on the return journey there was a sweet shop on the corner of Clifton Road where you could purchase loose cigarettes. I still visit the area as I am an ardent fan of Crystal Palace FC whose ground we had to pass for swimming lessons at Thornton Heath baths.

Like many on this site I have happy memories of (most of) my time at CSTS. I used to play the piano for the hymn in assembly and remember being told off severely by Mr Chapman for "jazzing up" the hymn one morning! I started at the original Selhurst Road building that was rumoured to be the setting of a Dickens novel and called Brunswick Villa, this may be pure fiction. Most of the great memories have already been expressed, but I do recall a room in that old house that was used for English lessons, Mr Pilcher (Pilch), that was exited via a fire escape from a window at lesson end. The Ben-hut for history with Mr Elsie. More another time.

However, we do not have a recording of the 2nd School Song ie Praise now to this our School etc. So... 1. does anyone have the music ? 2. better still, can you record your playing of the music on piano ? 3. or even better, can you arrange for a bunch of male voices to sing the song to piano accompaniment and record it ? What I find strange is the opening of a school in 1958 and closing in 1966 an eight year life. It is a great pity that both types of school no longer exist. Stanley has become a Harris Academy. Roger, Kevin McCarthy and myself all drove Lambretta scooters in 1967 and Roger was my best man in September of 1971. Roger - I want you to know Barbara and I are still happily married with 3 children and grandchildren on the way. We are having a celebration this year and just want to make contact with you. Are you in the UK? In America? Please contact me, if you want. Graham.

Entered in 62 and left in 64 after passing 13 plus and am surprised to see my name in the 1965 speech day leaflet as achieving something in woodwork. Strange as I make my living working in metal and plastic. My main recollection is that there were two streams of pupils and I came top of the bottom lot! Most probably better than bottom of the top lot. We of course spent a lot of time in the brickwork, metalwork and woodwork shop.

We both played cricket for the school and in the staff v boys matches which were great fun. I also won the annual inter-house cross country which was quite a feat for someone who ended up being a sprinter, albeit a poor one. The pic of Kev and his friend Dave Clarke brought a tear to my eye. And those industrial bins, i used to hide behind them frequently when bunking off!

Wonderful to read about John Bowden and Geoff Anscoombe and to have such positive memories of the place. I left in the 4th year as my parents moved us to Hastings. I was disappointed not to be able to follow the tradition of splitting the back of the school blazer and burning the tie (what remained of it once we had 'picked out half the coloured cotton on the stripes'). I still have an old booklet with a full listing of pupils and teachers which I will pass on as it pre-dates any you have on this site. I moved to Canada in 1968 and was suprised, like several other former students that the building was no longer there when I returned several years later to "pay them a visit". I started at CSTC in the old building in Norwood and was transfered to the 'new' school when it opened.

Spent the best years of my life there, friends like Chris Conway, Malolm bishop, Pete Brooks and many more, would love to get back in touch. I've very fond memoris of some teachers, Richards (english)gave me confidence where all others failed. Count Drac for lending me money to buy fags, brickwork teacher (can't remember name) for catching me smoking and not reporting me. Spencer (art) for encouraging me and finally Chas Chapman, although caning me frequently never gave up on me and always treated me fairly.

Comments:I am getting old so I suppose that I can remember what I choose but I am not sure that the happiest days of my life were while I was at CSTS. Perhaps this was my fault rather than theirs. I recall many of of the teachers listed, Spencer, Sherrington and of course the head 'Charlie' Chapman. Greetings to Martin Ecott who I do remember, not sure without further thought about the others who have posted. Will look you up again.

Comments:I confess I hadn't thought too much about the old school until last week when I was down Pampisford Road and was amazed to find the building no longer there. When did that happen?
Like Roger Cohen I was in form 1H in 1958. I can't remember who was form master in that 1st year, it was Norman Beale in the 2nd and 3rd and Mr Gent in the 4th and 5th. I only ever saw two of the boys after I left in 1963 and then only once but I remember everbody in the form very clearly.

Joined CSTS in 59 in form 1R - left 1964.
Either I'm incorrectly down as Alan Taylor on the roll-call, or there was another Taylor?
Have not been in contact with anyone since, apart from bumping into John Dean some years ago.

Comments:After 13+ exam, joined CSTS in 1956 at the old school in South Norwood and soon moved with the school to the brand new premises in Pampisford Road. Sad to see it's been knocked down. No sixth form at that time so left (with two others) in 1959 to go to John Ruskins Grammer - also demolished!

Comments:Delighted to see a web site for our old school. I wish I had known about our reunion because I would have been there and probably picked up old basher on the way. The school song is different to my day. We had a school hymn which went something like Our Father By Whose Servants Our House was built of old. Can't remember it I am not religious. I wonder if anybody can fill in the names in my school photograph.

sorry I missed the reunion as I live in Old Coulsdon. I was in Pete Arnotts class, wasn't that school song dreadful? It was always dragged out at speech day to please the old headmaster.
