Originally, the CSTS was the 'Croydon School of Building'. This had been established within Croydon Polytechnic in January 1943, training boys or young men in bricklaying, carpentry, plumbing etc.

After 'recognition' by the Ministry of Education as a Secondary Technical School, the Croydon School of Building evolved with a separate staff of its own, although it still shared buildings with Croydon Polytechnic. Management was transferred to Mr. C.J. Chapman as Head Teacher. The 'CSB' then became Croydon Secondary Technical School circa 1952.

The Selhurst Road frontage of the building was actually the entrance to the South Norwood branch of Croydon Polytechnic, which worked in conjunction with the Scarbrook Road branch.

The CSB/CSTS had two entrances, the main entrance was in Lawrence Road, and the secondary entrance (which was also used for morning, afternoon breaks and access to further temporary classes in the Scout Hut) was in the park walkway.

Here is a map of the location. The old CSB/CSTS buildings are now marked as "Comm Cen":
