Firstly, the all-important Pencil. The only type we were allowed to use was a 4H.
It was very hard and left an impression in the paper if you rubbed it out!

Then there was the Equipment: Drawing Board, T Square, Instruments, Ruler, Clips:

The ruler is an ‘original’ from Form 4A. It has several names scribed into it, 'Diane', 'Gillett', 'Tony', 'Kenny', and 'Clarke'.
It probably was originally owned by Graham Gillett.

Here is a close-up of Tim Ecott's 'Kern' TD instruments. Bought item by item (from Roffey & Clark in Croydon High Street) with pocket money, and housed in a home-made case lined with CSTS school trouser material....

Instruments (Tim Ecott)

Chas Moody adds "A set of drawing instruments which were bought through the school, possibly by arrangement with the shop that sold artists and draughting materials in Drummond Road, Croydon (Down the side of Allders dep't store if you remember). Mr. McAdam, (whose nickname I think was 'Mac') said the instruments were good quality and would last a lifetime. Well, I've still got them but as I'm not dead yet I can't fully testify to that!"

Instrument Case (Chas Moody)

"Tim's 'Kern' drawing instruments were far better quality but much more expensive as I found out when I started work as an apprentice draughtsman. 'Kern' and 'Wild' (pronounced Vilt), both of Swiss manufacture were the best, until everything went CAD of course but that's another story."

More from Chas Moody - "'Mac' said if we couldn't afford a drawing board just buy a 'T' square and beg, borrow or steal a piece of shuttering ply, and gave us the dimensions, including the radius of the corners. One of my classmates, Mick Monger (a good all round bloke - if you're out there Mick) got hold of some ply which we cut to size. That's what the drawing set [above] is pictured on."

"'Mac' was very particular and I remember him saying that dimension arrows should be like 'Zulu spears'."

All Technical Drawing work done by pupils was stored in a cupboard in the TD Office. Each pupil had a large pink folder assigned to hold their work. This surviving but rather battered example also has some artwork on the outside. (Image is of Roger Farleys TD folder).
