A Bedside Cupboard "In the 5th year I recall that Mr Ryan gave us free rein to design and build an item of our own choosing. I came up with a bedside cupboard. For some reason that escapes me now I got it into my head that I wanted to use African Walnut. I recall that my Father agreed to fund this but he got something of a shock when the timber merchant which used to be in Brighton Road, South Croydon (C.H.Davis?), charged him £5 for the wood! In any event, I forged ahead and I remember that it took nearly the whole of the academic year to complete! The cupboard then sat by my Mother's bed until she passed away in 1997, since when I have stored it. It would now only need cleaning and a good coat of beeswax to make it look as good as new."

A Coat Hook "Yes, I made the pot stand and the egg rack but they stayed in use at my parent's home, although I do vaguely remember being offered them back when they no longer wanted them. One item that was never used was the coat hook, one of the first things we made, with its mortise and tenon joint. Teacher Mike Ryan."
An Oak Book Rack "The oak book rack was made much later. The shelf was fixed to the sides with mortise and tenon joints and the back rail was joined with a stopped, or half-blind dovetail so the joint could not be seen on the sides." Click to enlarge
Click to enlarge An Oak Tray Table "The oak tray table was an optional piece. The legs pivot inwards and are hidden within the depth of the sides of the tray. They are held in place with rubber friction washers."
A School Badge "The School Badge is 8" high and 7 1/2" wide (Good old Imperial measurements that we all learned in!). I think it was an Art holiday homework project and recall that Eric Spencer wasn't particularly enamoured with as it was more woodwork than art!." Click to enlarge

Here are 4 photos of items made in the workshops during the 60's, by Dave Clarke:
A Table Lamp - made during Woodwork class circa 1966 and still in use today (2014).
There were two principal components: the base and the stem. Both were made on the lathe. Prior to bringing the two parts together the stem was drilled through the centre (on the lathe) for the cable to be eventually thread through. The base however, was channelled out on the underside to take the cable. The stem and the base were then brought together and glued. A brass lamp holder was screwed to the top of the stem and a cable threaded through and attached to the lamp holder. The base then had green baize felt glued to the underside. The lamp was completed by being polished and fitted with a suitable shade.

Click to enlarge A Teapot Stand - made in the 1st year (1961) in the Woodwork Workshop under direction of Mr. (Reg) Young. The octagonal top piece was first cut to shape and surfaced with Formica. The base was made from 2 pieces: first the ends were bevelled, then the 2 pieces joined at the centre with a halving joint and then screwed to the top piece. This item was in continuous use by Dave's mother for nearly 40 years!
Dave Clarke writes: "Mr Young would often gather the class round a bench to be shown a technique, equally often he would use the phrase '..now don't you do this' as he used a tool in a particularly dangerous way! Some will also remember (how could they forget), having their work mercilessly twisted or smashed to pieces with a mallet if it was poorly made."
A Fruit Bowl - made circa 1966 on one of the lathes in the Woodwork Workshop of Mr. (Reg) Young. This bowl is made of Sycamore wood. After it was turned, it was also finished on the lathe with beeswax and then buffed. Click to enlarge
Click to enlarge A Small Oak Bookstand - another 'set piece' made in Mr. (Reg) Young's woodwork shop. The base and rail are jointed to the sides with dowels and the piece is finished with a beeswax polish.
The book on display: Lonely Road by Nevil Shute, cost 3 shillings and 6 pence (3/6) - equivalent to 17.5p. It is a genuine 'school library' book, rebound in 1966 by the CSTS library monitors to make a more durable copy. It seems to have worked, in 2010 it is now 44 years old!
A Trug Basket: made in 1961/1962 (1st year) by Igor Andronov.
It still carries the label: 'I. Andronov Form 1J'. Igor remembers putting the label on prior to the basket being used as part of a display of work for a school 'Open Day'.

Here are 3 photos of items made in the woodwork shop, circa late 60's, by Geoff Hanson:
The first item from Geoff Hanson - A Fruit Bowl from the woodwork shop. "I forget which year but sometime in the late 60's. This has spent the last thirty years on a shelf in my home office full of small computer parts so it is hardy in pristine condition." Click to enlarge
